Did you know that we teach to a theme every month? This month is all about planes of movement!
Destinie started us off in the sagittal plane with forward flexion. With flexion fresh on the mind, Mollie introduced lateral flexion, or side-bending, in the frontal plane. We learned how to bend forward and to the side, so now it’s time to TWIST, baby!
Nicole is coming in hot tomorrow with a class all about rotation in the transverse plane. [Pause for “ooos and ahhhs.] But before we get to read about what’s in store, we’d like to take a nerdy moment to differentiate between rotation and circumduction – two types of movement that are commonly mistaken for one another.
Let’s take single-leg circle for example; no one’s favorite exercise. Proper single-leg circle is done with the circling thigh in external rotation, meaning the head of the femur is outwardly turned (think turning a door knob) in your hip socket. The exercise itself, the circling – now that is circumduction. Circumduction is all available movement put together - flexion, abduction, adduction, and extension. Got it? Still confused? Reply to this email!
With that, here are our class themes for this week:
Monday, January 16th @ 12PM with Nicole
Divide the body between upper and lower halves, and you have the transverse plane where rotation occurs. Rotation is fundamental to being human and you do it every day while walking, shaking your head to say no, or turning a door knob. That’s right, spinal and limb rotation all occur in the transverse plane. Today we’ll explore how rotation (mobility) and anti-rotation (stability) work together to create those yummy-supple-twisty stretches our bodies crave.
Wednesday, January 18th @ 8AM with Destinie
I am all about this rain, folks! CA needs it. It is, however, keeping me from getting in my daily walks. Anyone else? I can surely feel the lack of walking in my body. How has the rain affected you and how can I help? Let me know before class!
